Laser Cut 3D Books by Yusuke Ono

Yosuke Ono - Fab Cafe - 3D Brand Book

Back in 2012, Yusuke Ono, a partner at Noiz Architects, submitted an idea to the You Fab 2012 design contest. His proposal detailed a radical use of laser cutters to create a palm-sized book that tells a story in a very traditional way, but it also opens up like a fan, creating an entirely 3-dimensional world. Ono won the contest, which was sponsored by Fab Café, a space that serves coffee but also rents out time on their very own laser cutter. Each page in the book is first designed in CAD, an architectural design software, before it is cut and assembled.

Ono has continued to innovate and expand on his idea and, now, he’s receiving international acclaim. A new set of 3D books have just won a silver at the 2014 New York ADC (Art Directors Club) and another award by the D&AD in the category Brand Expression in Print. Ono designed a book about Mt. Fuji, one about the beloved fairytale “Jack and the Beanstalk”, as well as a promotional brand book for Fab Cafe.

The prestigious award gives credit to Ono’s new platform for expressing a story, but also his and Fab Cafe’s vision for digital fabrication.
